"So We Beat On..."

Good evening to you, my dear friend *tips hat in a respectful manner*. How have you been feeling, old sport?

By the way, old sport can (and must) be used again in reverence to Gatsby as it is now the Roaring Twenties yet again (and also the title of this post is the first part of the last line of the book).

Today is the 22nd of February, which means that it is the day for Girlguiding to think about other Girlguiding members around the world- my district is meeting on 27th to celebrate together. Just wanted to mention this, as it's fairly important, I believe, to think of others around the world. For example, the Guides have been looking at Syrian Guides over the past few weeks who have meetings even when there is violence and war.

Anyway, today's post is (mostly) about the environment, which does actually tie in quite nicely with WTD as one of Girlguiding UK's big things recently has been about cutting down plastic waste and becoming more environmentally aware. At my church, our youth group (named Branches by me because no one else had any ideas) is doing something called Eco Church, where we're trying to get our church and the congregation and the wider community more environmentally friendly.

One of the things that we're doing this year is a Carbon Fast. Basically: over Lent, each day we have something that you can do/think about. If you want to do this Carbon Fast, you can find a link to the planner here with a few helpful links. If you're not religious, don't feel put off by the fact that some of the things are more Christian orientated (Sundays, for example) and just do the fast as and when.

Some of the other things that we've been thinking about/doing:

  • Green Tariff - have a look to see if you're on the green tariff
  • Solar Panels - our church, being an old massive building, has a lot of space for solar panels and we're even thinking that we'll produce more energy than we'll need!
  • Bee Bombs - bee bombs are small pellets made from clay and some wildflower seeds that can be planted in holes in the ground and left to grow
  • Bird boxes - how many bird boxes/feeders do you have in your garden?
  • Bug hotel - could you make some sort of bug hotel (just search bug hotels on Pinterest and see what you could do!)
If you have Instagram and do any of the things on the carbon fast, please tag us (@ecochurch5folds) in any photos of it. :) Happy World Thinking Day and good luck with your carbon fast futures!
