Do You Know What A Flavoured Reed Is? Don't Ask Me, I Play The Flute

I found this in my draft folder the other day, and even though I don't actually go to Sinfonia anymore (due to the joy of exams), I thought that maybe I'd add some of the stuff to today's post. So, enjoy, I guess? I play flute in a few music groups, most of them are at school, but that's cool. Church has the better acoustics, and surprisingly I have about the same amount of space whether I play at school or squished in the corner at church. It doesn't help that playing the flute means (probably) poking the person next to you with your instrument. And playing the flute also means that tuning involves playing the note, pulling out/pushing in the head and saying close enough, knowing full well that the flute will heat up as you play and will go out of tune again. The joy of being musical. And this is what I was going to write a post about: we have a question at the beginning of orchestra, or at least, we used to. But anyway, here are some examples with my an...

Why Do Ducks Stand Out In The Rain

Image
So it's Mothering Sunday today (have you seen the Google Doodle, 'cos it's adorable- and maybe you'll understand the title for today) and I was going to do a post yesterday, then I remembered today and so here we are. Firstly, thanks to Mum for being wonderful and amazing and supporting me through everything (even though I don't want to do science in the future 😂) Secondly, this IMPORTANT FOR TODAY (because I know it can be hard, for those who aren't mothers for reasons, or for those who miss their mothers for reasons): Mothers aren't just the biological ones, the ones that you live with. While my own mother is incredibly important to me, there are other mothers who have helped 'raise' me so that I am the person who I am now.  For example, my three godmothers, or my friends' mothers, or the women at Church who give me cake (and more cake). My older cousins, my aunts, my grandma, my friend's grandma- they are all amazing an...

What Makes Something Really Interesting Is...

Image
Hi! It's me again- how long has it been since my last post? Oops. Anyway, it was my friends birthday yesterday, and we had a party for her last night-this morning. I thought that she should get a shout out, because she's awesome and because it's the only interesting thing that's happened this week. Apart from my French Speaking Mock (is that interesting? I don't know). But we had a party, which isn't really my thing, although I did enjoy myself for at least a few hours (are you proud of me?) and I even danced! I know. Amazing. Also, isn't it weird how songs can remind you of things? Like 'Mr Brightside' instantly makes me think of my Silver DofE expedition, and 'Take Me Home, Country Roads' always reminds me of the New York/Washington DC trip. Or how 'You Give Love a Bad Name' (or anything by Lawson) takes me back to Saturdays before revision, when we used to tidy/clean the house while the music played at the top of the st...

Safe In Your Sound

So I was talking to my parents the other day about being an organ donor, despite my 'young' age. I wasn't sure if I would be allowed to become an organ donor, as I'm under 18, although I'm sure that my parents would allow my organs to be harvested if something did happen to me. They're both organ donors, and they give blood, so I knew that it wasn't going to be something that would cause a massive argument- to be honest, an argument probably would have occurred if I'd said that I didn't want to donate my organs. And they'd find a way to donate them anyway. Besides, who wouldn't want to donate their organs? Even though I am a Christian (although I just wrote that I am a Christmas and had to backspace pretty fast, so maybe don't trust anything that I'm writing) I don't have anything against it because I believe that God wants me to help as many people as possible- and according to the NHS website, you may be able to help up to...

I've Gone On An Adventure (but next time I'm going to bring my cat!)

Image
So we are currently half way through the week of half term here, and have I done anything but revise? As a matter of fact, I have indeed done other things (and I hope that you, dear reader, have not been focusing on school/work this week...) For example, I went out to have a coffee with my friend yesterday (although I probably shouldn't have had yet another coffee), which was lovely. And I actually went outside. And then I also went outside today, because the gate to our front door (that we don't use) was open and I wanted to shut it. What I didn't realise was that the gate is such a long way away from our side door. I should have brought snacks and a bottle of water. And I also went to the dentist today (which is okay, although I have to have a crown put on one of my teeth after GCSEs). And while we were there, we heard the news that one lucky cat could inherit £150 million! In case you haven't heard, fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld's cat, Choupetter, co...

Tears Aren't A Sign Of Being Weak, They're A Sign Of Hope

I have just had 2000 views, so thank you- subscribe if you haven't, and we'll see how fast I can get to 3000! But, anyway, good evening, and happy valentine's day (even if I don't really acknowledge it). Do you get the Doctor Who reference? It's me, again, if you can still remember me...it's been ages since I last wrote something. Truth be told, I simply haven't had anything to write about, and every time I do open up a new post, I end up closing it down again. It's becoming a bit of an issue, really. But today, something pretty major happened in my life, something that will be crucial to my future. My first Sixth Form Interview *cough* sorry, Guidance Meeting. It's called a Guidance Meeting, but it is actually an interview, trust me. She was lovely and all, and we got to ask questions at the end, but it was definitely an interview. Basically, I was asked about my choices, why I wanted to do particular courses, any plans for the future...

The Place Where Childhood Dies

It's always sad when your childhood dies, isn't it? Yesterday, we had our biannual (I think that's the word anyway) festival for our village. Last time, I stayed for the whole day: participating in the parade as a Guide, eating burgers and ice cream, listening to the music, and finally watching the fireworks. This year, however, I participated in the parade (unwillingly, trust me) then went home. Despite there being something so wonderful about the family feel of a village collecting together to listen to some good music in the dark (maybe it's something to do with history and the thought of having to rely on your neighbours), I didn't want to be there for long in the heat and the noise (and I also saw loads of people that I know from school- embarrassing!☺️). So I was pretty boring and watched the Tour de France with my dad (as we do every year- those of you who also watched it, what the hell happened?? All the good riders were involved in crashes IN THE FIRST ...

I Think That I'm a Sloth

Hey everyone, I'm pretty that I haven't written anything for so long, but I spent the weekend editing/writing my novel, and I'm at work experience now. Yay. Nah, it's pretty cool really (I'm allowed to show my ankles!). And I may be writing this to procrastinate, but whatever. I'm not being paid and it can just be part of my lunch break. But the title: basically, I miss school (weird, I know) and my friends and I even miss my sisters calling me random names (Sid the Sloth, if you can remember one of my previous posts). So yeah. Anyway. I've been listening to music today while working (another good thing about work- as well as being allowed to go to the toilet when I want, coffee and biscuits) and I'm going to talk about something (vaguely) poetical. Remember those songs, the ones that give you chills as the lyrics weave their magic in your ears and you can't help but listen to it properly? Those bittersweet songs, the ones tha...
